Project Schools
Primary schools participating in the Ghana Reads programme, spanning Phase One and Phase Two across multiple regions of Ghana.
The Ghana Reads programme brings together primary schools from across multiple regions of Ghana, creating a vibrant community of learners, teachers, and supporters united around a shared commitment to literacy. Participating schools serve as living laboratories where evidence-based reading approaches are put into practice, with teachers receiving ongoing coaching and support to refine their craft. The programme's phased structure allows schools to join at different stages, building on lessons learned from earlier cohorts while continuously expanding its reach. By working closely with local educators and school leadership, the initiative ensures that improvements in reading instruction are sustainable and deeply rooted in each school's unique context and culture.
At the heart of the programme is a carefully designed pedagogical philosophy that emphasises structured, enjoyable, and interactive learning experiences for children. Teachers are equipped with practical strategies and resources that make reading lessons engaging and accessible, even in classrooms with limited materials. The programme draws on a theory of change that connects teacher development directly to improved pupil outcomes, recognising that empowered educators are the single most important factor in a child's reading journey. Through regular practice, reflection, and revision, teachers grow in confidence and skill, creating classroom environments where children not only learn to read but develop a genuine love for books and storytelling.
Technology plays a supportive and thoughtful role in the programme, with offline-friendly digital tools and resources helping to bridge gaps where connectivity is limited. Digital storybooks and interactive content are designed to complement, rather than replace, the essential human connection between teacher and pupil. These resources are carefully aligned with the Ghanaian curriculum, ensuring that every story and activity reinforces the learning objectives of the classroom. By employing a blended approach, the programme makes high-quality reading materials accessible to schools in both urban and rural settings, promoting equity and inclusion across the diverse communities it serves.
The impact of the Ghana Reads programme extends far beyond test scores, touching the lives of children, families, and entire communities. As reading skills improve, pupils gain confidence and curiosity that spills over into other subjects and everyday life. The programme actively encourages community involvement, recognising that literacy is a shared responsibility that thrives when parents, volunteers, and local organisations join together in support. Through workshops, shared experiences, and public celebration of achievement, the programme builds a lasting culture of reading that continues to grow long after the formal intervention ends, planting seeds for lifelong learning and empowerment across Ghana.
