About OLE Ghana

Open Learning Exchange – Ghana is part of a global network committed to improving literacy and education in Ghanaian primary schools through community-driven innovation.

Who We Are

Open Learning Exchange (OLE) Ghana operates as part of the worldwide Open Learning Exchange network. Our work centres on the Ghana Reads programme, an initiative supported by All Children Reading (ACR) that brings structured literacy support into primary classrooms across Ghana.

We collaborate closely with local communities, school leadership, and religious institutions to create sustainable improvements in how children learn to read. Our approach is grounded in iterative cycles of change — testing, refining, and scaling what works in real classroom settings.

Our Approach

Community Partnership

We work alongside local communities and faith-based institutions, recognising that lasting educational change requires deep roots in the places it serves.

Pedagogy Coaching

Teachers receive structured coaching and support, building their capacity to deliver effective literacy instruction in challenging classroom environments.

Iterative Improvement

Every intervention is tested, measured, and refined. Our model evolves through continuous feedback from schools, coaches, and student outcomes.

The Ghana Reads Programme

Ghana Reads is the flagship initiative of OLE Ghana, originally sponsored by All Children Reading (ACR). The programme has worked across multiple phases, reaching primary schools in the Ashanti Region and beyond.

Phase One schools included Akuakrom Methodist Primary, Ogua SDA Primary, Pokuase Methodist, Sacred Heart Roman Catholic, and several others. Phase Two expanded the reach to additional schools such as Achiaman MA Primary, St. Peter's Anglican, and World Vision Semanahyia Presb. Primary.

Each participating school receives tailored support designed to strengthen reading outcomes, with a focus on teacher development and classroom resources.

At the heart of OLE Ghana's work is a belief that every child deserves the chance to read, learn, and grow. Through the Ghana Reads programme, we bring structured literacy support into primary classrooms, equipping teachers with practical tools, coaching, and engaging digital resources. Our approach blends proven teaching methods with innovative technology, including offline-friendly applications and interactive educational games that work even in schools with limited connectivity. By partnering closely with local communities, school leadership, and religious institutions, we create a shared sense of ownership that sustains progress long after a pilot project ends. This community-driven model has shown measurable improvements in pupil reading outcomes and continues to expand across Ghanaian schools.

Our philosophy is rooted in the belief that education is a collective responsibility, one that thrives when teachers, families, and organizations cooperate toward a common goal. We promote the use of open educational resources and evidence-based practices, helping teachers move beyond rote learning toward interactive, pupil-centred classrooms. Through workshops, coaching sessions, and continuous professional development, we support educators in applying new techniques with confidence. The results speak for themselves: more children enjoying reading, improved literacy outcomes, and classrooms filled with energy and curiosity. As part of the wider Open Learning Exchange network, we also share lessons learned with partners in other countries, contributing to a global movement for educational change.
