Pillars of Innovation
The structural foundations that guide OLE Ghana's model for supporting learning in primary schools across the country.
A Structured Approach to Educational Change
OLE Ghana's work is built on a set of interconnected pillars that together form a coherent model for innovation in literacy and learning. Each pillar reinforces the others, creating a system designed for sustained impact rather than isolated interventions.
The model emphasises continuous improvement and adaptation — responding to what works in real classrooms, refining approaches through evidence, and staying grounded in the daily realities of Ghanaian primary schools.
Core Pillars
Pedagogy Coaching
A central pillar of the OLE Ghana model. Coaches work alongside teachers in participating schools, providing classroom-based guidance, feedback, and practical strategies to strengthen literacy instruction.
Community Engagement
Sustainable change requires the involvement of parents, local leaders, and school management committees. OLE Ghana facilitates dialogue and shared ownership of school improvement goals.
Iterative Learning Cycles
Rather than one-off training, the model uses repeated cycles of plan–act–reflect–adjust. This allows teachers and schools to build capacity gradually and embed new practices deeply.
Evidence & Measurement
Progress is tracked through classroom observation, student assessment data, and regular reflection sessions. Findings inform the next cycle of coaching and support.
How the Pillars Connect
Pedagogy Coaching sits at the heart of the model, but it does not operate in isolation. Coaches draw on evidence from measurement activities, engage community stakeholders to build supportive environments, and guide teachers through iterative cycles that turn new techniques into lasting habits.
This integrated design reflects OLE Ghana's belief that improving learning outcomes requires attention to the whole system around a child — the teacher, the school leadership, the community, and the data that tells everyone whether progress is real.
To understand the thinking behind this approach, see Our Theory of Change. For the schools where these pillars are put into practice, visit Project Schools.
OLE Ghana's pillar-based approach to educational change reflects a deep commitment to making literacy and learning genuinely transformative for children across the country. By organising its work around interconnected foundations, the organisation ensures that every effort — from teacher coaching to the delivery of interactive digital content — reinforces a larger, coherent vision. This is not about isolated projects that come and go; it is about building durable systems that schools can rely on year after year. The model values evidence and adaptation, meaning that what is learned in real classrooms feeds directly back into better practice, better resources, and better outcomes for pupils who deserve every opportunity to read, grow, and succeed.
At the heart of the model is a strong emphasis on supporting teachers as the primary agents of change in the classroom. Through ongoing coaching, structured practice, and access to innovative tools, educators are empowered to bring the curriculum to life in engaging, joyful ways. The organisation also champions the use of offline-capable technology and open educational resources, making high-quality learning materials available even in communities where connectivity is limited. By combining human support with smart, practical innovation, OLE Ghana helps create learning environments where children are encouraged, motivated, and genuinely excited about reading and discovery.
Beyond individual classrooms, OLE Ghana's work connects to a wider community of practice — sharing experiences, learning from partners, and contributing to conversations about education both locally and internationally. The organisation's philosophy is rooted in the belief that meaningful, sustained change requires collaboration, reflection, and a willingness to keep improving. Whether through pilot programmes, publications, or participation in workshops and conferences, the goal remains consistent: to promote literacy and learning in ways that are accessible, affordable, and deeply respectful of the communities served. Every step forward is a step toward a future where every child has the chance to thrive through the power of reading.
